Lake Waramaug

Named for a respected leader of Native Americans living in the area before 1735, Lake Waramaug was ringed by industrial activity in the 18th century, with 21 water-powered mills along two and a half miles of the Aspetuck River, running south out of the lake: a blast furnace, a forge, a wagon factory, and mills where, before the Civil War, marble from the nearby hills was sawed and sanded into blocks.
