Held at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury. Both lectures include a delicious lunch by the Exhibition Café.
$15 for Mattatuck Museum Members, $20 for non-members for each lecture.

 

Robert Austin: The Artists of the Litchfield Hills
Thursday, June 5, 12noon

Mr. Austin will speak on his ten years of research and present his lavishly illustrated book, published in association with the Picture Perfect exhibit. He has identified more than 250 artists who were active in the northwest corner before 1940, including many prominent artists not previously known to have worked in the Litchfield Hills. The book will be available for purchase at the Mattatuck Museum.



 

Laurie Rayner: William Henry Lippincott
Thursday, June 12, 12noon

Introduced by Mattatuck Museum Curator Ann Smith. Laurie Rayner, Associate Director of the Connecticut Humanities Council, will discuss William Henry Lippincott, a late nineteenth - early twentieth century painter who found inspiration in Morris, CT. She will explore how Lippincott's career mirrors many little known painters from this time period.

A lecture by Elizabeth Kornhauser, Wadsworth Atheneum, Deputy Director, Chief Curator and Krieble Curator of American Painting and Sculpture.
 

Adaptation: Impressionism and the American Artist
Thursday, August 21, 7:30pm

Noted art historian Richard Boyle will present an illustrated lecture on the adaptation of French Impressionism by American artists. Professor Boyle will focus on the two forms of adaptation that created American Impressionism, namely, the adaptation of a style of painting and the adaptation of American artists to the changing attitudes towards the landscape. Boyle is the author of several books on American Impressionist painting and painters including Willard Metcalf and John Twachtman.

 


Art in the Park
Friday, July 11 from 12 noon - 3:00 pm
Take a stroll on the Waterbury Green and watch as artists paint en plein air. Stop by to chat or bring your own painting supplies. Kids are invited to join the fun with our Summer Art Camp students for art lessons from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. Summer refreshments will be available for purchase outside from the Exhibition Café, or take out a delicious lunch and enjoy it outdoors. 

 

The Art Trail Bus Tour
Friday, August 15    10am - 4pm
Meander through the Litchfield Hills to see two exhibits on our Picture Perfect satellite tour. First weíll travel to the Gunn Historical Museum in Washington, CT to view the exhibit Picture Perfect Washington: John Folinsbee and the exquisite ceiling painting by H. Siddons Mowbray in the Gunn Memorial Library. Weíll enjoy a gourmet boxed lunch from the Exhibition Café outside, then weíll visit the Litchfield Historical Society to see their exhibit, Picture Perfect: Litchfield, featuring paintings by VanderPoel, Deming and Van Laer.

$50 Mattatuck Museum Members, $65 non-members.

 

Romantic Interlude:
Picture Perfect Canoe Trip

Saturday, August 23, 1 p.m.
Enjoy a rugged canoe trip down the Housatonic River to see the landscape that inspired the artists of the Litchfield Hills. Associate Curator Raechel Guest will discuss the artists and their influences as we meander down the river. Clarke Outdoors will provide the canoes and guides.

Pre-Registration is Required; limited space available.
$45 Members, $60 Non-Members

 

Picture Perfect Treehouse Time

Saturday, September 6, 1:30 - 4:30pm
Kids ages 8 - 12 will have fun in this art and writing workshop. Construct an imaginary treehouse tucked away in our pretend corner of the Litchfield Hills. Inspired by the Picture Perfect exhibit, weíll listen to stories that evoke the imagination to create our own paintings and prose.

$20 Mattatuck Museum Members, $25 non-members.
