The five artists represented in Where Lies Beauty mediate between the worlds of conceptual instigation and traditional practice. Each is successful in articulating contemporary experience and each re-acquaints us with beauty, for their sculptures and paintings arrest our attention and provide a perceptual response of pleasure, meaning, and satisfaction.
After receiving a BFA from Boise State University, Susan Madacsi moved to Texas where
she developed her blacksmithing skills. In 2000, Madacsi moved to New England where she
teaches and demonstrates her art. She lives and works on a farm in Ledyard, Connecticut.

Mia Brownell was born in Chicago, Illinois to a sculptor and biophysicist. A graduate of
Carnegie Mellon (BFA) and SUNY/Buffalo (MFA), Brownell is Professor of Art at Southern
Connecticut State University. She lives and works in New Rochelle, New York.

Born in Iran, Afarin Rahmanifar immigrated to the United States after the Iranian Revolution thirty
years ago. She holds an MFA from the University of Connecticut and is a part-time professor of
Visual Arts at Eastern Connecticut State University.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Leeah Joo immigrated to the United States when she was eleven. Joo has a MFA
in painting from Yale and has received grants and awards from the Pollock Krasner Foundation and the
Connecticut Commission on the Arts. She lives in Middlebury, Connecticut.

Eleanor Miller studied at Connecticut College (BFA), The Fashion Institute of Technology, New
York, and the School of Visual Arts in New York (MFA). She returned to Connecticut after her
studies in New York and is inspired by the farmland that surrounds her Preston home and studio.
