The Seymour R. Thaler and Mildred Thaler Cohen Collection of American Paintings was presented to the Mattatuck Museum in 1999 by Mrs. Thaler Cohen of New York City. Assembled over a thirty year period, the collection of 48 paintings includes examples of work in the Hudson River style, the Barbizon style, Tonalism, Impressionism, Symbolism, the Ash Can School, and modern Realism. It reflects the nation in a golden era and includes some of the most accomplished American artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries including: Albert Bierstadt, Ralph Blakelock, Jasper Cropsey, William Morris Hunt, Ernest Lawson, Edward Potthast, Everett Shinn and J. Alden Weir among others. Some works are currently on view in the 19th century gallery; others in the Max R. Traurig Library.
